Born, into farming families on both sides, Ive been in the garden since before I could walk.
( My family has the home movies to prove it.)
While Chef has tasked me with selecting, evaulating, explaining, demonstrating... teaching... the tools and toys of gardening and farming...
The reason's why... she put me in this role are
1. Ive dug potatos and carrots and turnips... root crop vegetables out of the ground with everything from my bare hands, to trowels and digging forks... to my Uncle going through with a plow to turn the roots over.
2. I know the pros and cons of no till, vs broadforking, vs vertical tilling , vs traditional tilling vs using a tractor to plow, disc and or...till.
3. Weeding is a chore.... UNLESS... you either do it in the rain (or right after) OR you have the right tools. Most people aspire to have raised beds, but if you have long handled tools... you still make it easier on your back. (For a lot less money)
Ive spent the last 6 years , gardening with examples of most everything you'll find in your local big box store, nursery or youtube gardening video. Some items I would buy again... I dont have anything that I would get rid of...
But some things are better in certain conditions.
And some can be over kill.
I use my tools on a Urban Farm, an inner city yard, a suburban yard, a hobby farm/farmette and a decent sized farm.
In beds and rows that range from rich dark and well composted to rock hard iron rich, filled with stones... clay. You can grow in... or on top of almost anything.
My Blog... our blogs will document, how we get it done.
How we make the garden majic happen.
1st tip... wood handled tools are easier on my hands... boiled linseed oil keeps them in good shape when you leave them outside in the weather...
Steel long handled tools are heavy... but you wont break them.
Corona hand tools are worth it. Most anything else you're going to bend or break...
The difference between wood handle and metal handle tools is metal transfers vibration into your arms and wood dampens it. Less fatigue after working all day.
Lets go play in the dirt!
